Obituary for John Bourke

John  Bourke
John Bourke, 69, a long time area resident, formerly of Archer Street in the Bronx, NY, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Vassar Brother’s Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Mr. Bourke was a coach cleaner for Metro North Railroad for 22 years retiring in 2008.

Born on March 30, 1948 he was the son of the late John and Grace (Byrne) Bourke. Mr. Bourke proudly served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. On October 5, 1975 at St. Anthony’s Church in the Bronx he married Bella DeFiore who survives at home.

Mr. Bourke was the past president and a life member of the VVA Chapter #118. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #1949 in Wingdale, NY. Mr. Bourke loved sports, playing softball until he was 65. He also coached the Bronx Warriors Football team. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He was also an avid golfer and played in the men’s league at Beekman Golf Course in Beekman, NY.

In addition to his loving wife, Mr. Bourke is survived by two sons, Christopher Bourke and his wife, Aletha, of Poughquag, NY, and Dennis Bourke of Dover Plains; a daughter, Tonianne Bourke, of Dover Plains; a daughter-in-law, Jen Bourke, of Harrison, NY; two brothers, Peter Bourke and his wife, Mary, of Pearl River, NY and Kevin Bourke and his wife, Joan, of Pearl River, NY and two sisters, Marianne Jones and her husband, Frank, of Pearl River, NY and Margaret Boyce of New Jersey. He is also survived by four grandchildren, John, Cadence, Dylan and Kylie Bourke; a sister-in-law, Anna Macario, of Dover Plains and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Bourke was predeceased by his son, John Bourke, Jr and a brother-in-law, Michael DeFiore.

The family would like to thank the doctor’s and staff at the VA Hudson Valley Health Care System, Castle Point Campus and the Make A Wish Foundation for the care and compassion given to John over the past several months.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017 at St Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, 1496 Commonwealth Ave., Bronx, NY.
