John Peter Handke, Jr., 78, a lifelong area resident, died on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at The Kent Specialty Care Facility in Kent, CT. Mr. Handke was a food service worker at the Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic, NY retiring in 1998. He was also a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia, NY.

Born on May 6, 1935 in Catskill, NY, he was the son of the late John P. Handke, Sr. and Florence (Cross) Handke. Mr. Handke is survived by a brother, Paul Eugene Handke and his wife, Evelyn, of Wassaic, NY; two nieces, Victoria Zelker, Kay Green and five nephews, Elliot Handke, William Kelley, and Stanley, George, and Ronald Vladick. He is also survived by several great nieces and nephews and one great-great nephew and one great-great niece. Besides his parents, Mr. Handke was predeceased by a sister, Helen Hardin.,

Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Kent Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at South Amenia Cemetery, South Amenia Rd., Amenia, NY.
