Obituary for Susan Marie Conklin

Susan Marie Conklin, 63, of Dover Plains, NY, died on May 16, 2022 after fighting a courageous three-year battle with cancer.

Susan was born October 17, 1958 in Sharon, CT to Doris (Smith) and Allen Roberts. Susan had a deep love for her family and friends and was known for her generosity and compassion. Susan graduated from Dutchess Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Early Child Care and later graduated from the Nursing Program as a registered nurse. She developed a life-long passion for psychiatric nursing. She worked for Taconic DDSO and Hudson River Psychiatric Center for a total of 38 years. Some of her happiest years were with her friends at Hudson River Psychiatric Center where she served as the assistant director of nursing.

Susan married Kayel Conklin on July 6, 1986. The two were work sweethearts and lifelong companions. Together, they lived in Dover Plains and helped raise Sarah, Melissa and Jesse. In 1988, they were blessed with one child, Kayel (KC) Conklin.

Susan was an avid volunteer who served her community tirelessly. She was a member of the Dover High School Board of Education, a member of the Town of Dover Lions Club and helped pack lunches for children at the Center for Compassion in Dover Plains for those in need. Susan lived a busy life splitting her time between her family and friends whom she loved dearly. She enjoyed swimming, traveling, margaritas and spending time with her son and grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Susan is survived by her children Kayel (Anna) Conklin, Melissa (Nick) Garland and Sarah (Chris) Frazier and her grandchildren, Coleman and Clayton Conklin, Addison and Caleb Garland, and Revan and Minerva Frazier. She is also survived by her brothers, Allen (Peggy) Roberts, David (Linda) Roberts, Richard Roberts and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her loving parents and her sister-in-law, Diane Roberts. Susan will be especially remembered for her beautiful smile, humor and thoughtfulness toward others. Her spirit always made any day brighter.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 20, 2022 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Copake Cemetery, Route 7A, Copake, NY.
