Obituary for John Arthur Granger

John Arthur Granger, 85, a quintessential Englishman and renowned bespoke tailor in England and the United States, of Gaylordsville and Sherman, CT, passed away on June 6, 2018 at Regional Hospice in Danbury, CT. Born on January 25, 1933 in Carshalton (Surrey) England, he was the son of the late George Arthur and Rose (Newell) Granger.

A graduate of Tailors and Cutters Academy in London, England, he served a seven-year apprenticeship under master tailor Sir Hardy Amies. Mr. Granger was the owner and head cutter of Norton & Sons of the Bespoke Tailoring Company on London’s Savile Row originally established in 1812. He was a member and the former president of the Master Tailors Benevolent Association in London, England.

During the early 1950’s, Mr. Granger served for two years in the Royal Airforce of the United Kingdom.

In addition to his avocation as a bespoke tailor, he was an avid fly fisherman, gardener and bird enthusiast.

His family treasured him as a devoted husband and father.

Mr. Granger is survived by his wife, Irit Granger of Gaylordsville and Sherman; two sons, Nicholas Granger, and his wife, Sheena, of Winchcombe, England and Andrew Granger of Falmouth, England; a daughter, Jessica Granger of Los Angeles, CA and eight grandchildren, William, Audrey, James, Danny, Olly, Jemima, Lottie and Archie Granger. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Dennis and Raymond Granger.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, North Main St., Kent, CT with Reverend Roger White officiating.
