Obituary for John P. Culligan Sr.

John P.  Culligan Sr.
John P. Culligan, Sr., 65, a lifelong Amenia resident, died on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at home in Amenia. Mr. Culligan was a heavy equipment operator with the New York State Department of Transportation for 37 years retiring in 2006. He also worked doing maintenance part-time for the Town of Amenia.

Born on October 16, 1951 in Sharon, CT, he was the son of the late John (Dick) Culligan and Ellen Murphy Culligan. He attended Webutuck schools and was a 1970 Webutuck High School graduate. From January 21, 1971 to November 20, 1972, he served in the United States Army as a member of the 101st Airborne Division and was stationed in Vietnam. On September 7, 1980 in Amenia, NY, he married Annette Rebillard who survives at home.

John was a 48-year member of the Amenia Fire Company, a fire commissioner, a member of the Millerton American Legion Post # 178 and a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia. In addition, he was an avid golfer and hunter.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, John P. Culligan, Jr., and his wife, Samantha, of Stanfordville, NY and a daughter, Janel Russo, and her husband, Scott, of Wassaic, NY and a sister, Janice Heck of Southbury, CT. Mr. Culligan is also survived by three grandchildren Colton Culligan, Joseph Ferrari and Anthony Russo, a nephew, Scott Heck, and his wife, Alyson, a great niece, Amiee Heck and great nephew, Ethan Heck of Southbury, CT.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. The Amenia Fire Company will conduct services at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at Immaculate Conception Church, Lavelle Road in Amenia. Burial with military honors will follow at Amenia Island Cemetery in Amenia. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Amenia Fire Company, 36 Mechanic St., Amenia, NY 12501.
