Obituary for Muriel Rothstein

Muriel Rothstein, a former long-time resident of Amenia, NY and Sharon, CT, and recent eight year resident of Delray Beach, FL, passed away on Friday, December 4, 2015. Muriel was born on September 24, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late Julius and Julia (Haves) Furst.
She grew up in Brooklyn, NY graduating from Girls Commercial High School there. On February 25, 1945 she married Leon Rothstein of Amenia, NY. They lived in Amenia for over 50 years. During that time they raised their three children and worked in the community. For many years Muriel held several administrative assistant and leadership positions (Webutuck Central Schools, Dutchess Area Rural Transportation and the local Mended Hearts Chapter). She was a member of several organizations during her Amenia years: Beth David Congregation, Order of The Eastern Star, Amenia Free Library Board, Mended Hearts and Sharon Bridge Club.
Muriel was an avid bridge player, a prolific reader, excellent cook and baker, talented piano player and seamstress.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Leon in 1996, her brother Morton Furst, sister Shirley (Furst) Sandweiss and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by three children: daughter Gail (Rothstein) Gamble (husband Alan) of Amenia, NY, son Dr. Richard Rothstein (wife Lia) of Hanover, NH, and son Jay Rothstein (wife Patrice Cistulli) of Sudbury, MA, grandchildren Jennifer Gamble Guild of Wellesley, MA, Jeffrey Gamble of Poughkeepsie, NY, Ariel (Rothstein) Clemmer (husband Darrell) of New York City, Zachary Rothstein (wife Alli Smith) of London, England, Elena Rothstein (fiancé Joshua Cook) of Douglas, MA, Miles Rothstein of Sudbury, MA, and one great-grandchild, Aidan Guild, of Wellesley, MA, and several nieces and nephews.
Muriel was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, community member and friend.
There will be no calling hours. Graveside service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 7, 2015 at the Schomre Israel Cemetery, 55-67 LaGrange Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY.
