Rev. Doris Foltz Arnold, 87, a longtime resident of Dover Plains, NY, died on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Sharon Hospital in Sharon CT. Rev. Arnold worked as an education supervisor at the Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic, NY from 1956 to 1983. Rev. Arnold was also the former pastor of the Dover Plains United Methodist Church and South Dover United Methodist Church in Wingdale, NY from 1978 to 1990 and the Gallatin Reformed Church in Gallatin, NY in 1989.

Born on May 2, 1926 in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Xenia and Irene Foltz. In 1948, Rev. Arnold earned a B.A. degree at Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, VA and that year was also ordained to the Disciples of Christ (Christian Church) Ministry.

After completing a Master’s degree in Religious Education at Lexington Theological Seminary in Lexington, KY in 1951, she served as an associate minister of the Paris (Kentucky) Christian Church until 1955. On April 1, 1953 in Beaver Creek, MD, she married Raymond M. Arnold who died on April 26, 1998.

Rev. Arnold went on to earn a second Master’s degree at Columbia University in New York City in 1964 and completed doctoral studies at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL in1968.
During her tenure as an education supervisor at the Wassaic Developmental Center, she was a member of the Mentally Retarded Educators Association and served as its secretary from 1957 to 1983.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at the Dover Plains United Methodist Church, 26 Mill St., Dover Plains, NY with Rev. Carl B. Franson officiating. Burial will take place at Beaver Creek Cemetery in Beaver Creek, MD at a later date.
