Condolence From: Richard S Wells
Condolence: I am saddened to stumble upon this news. Mr. Hamlen was my French teacher at Thomas More School in Harrisville, New Hampshire and more importantly a kind and patient man who directed a truly impressive performance of the Mikado using the very limited pool of students (I don't believe there was more than 65 over 4 grades) as well as enlisting many very talented musicians including Donna Austin from New England to the cause. I was Pish Tush in the operetta and he assigned me a few more musical selections than written into the part. I recall with pride my participation and his father's praise for my role (it seems his father played the role of Pish Tush as well). Sadly the only recording of that night was lost in a fire suffered at his family residence. He also formed a barbershop group (I think perhaps 8 of us) that he also joined and which brought much pleasure to those involved as well as what limited audience was available. I sought him out a few years back and we had a nice conversation wherein he encouraged me to look him up when in New York. Unfortunately that would not come to pass. Requiescat in Pace Sir you shan't be forgotten and will always be recalled with respect.
