Obituary for Shirley Ann Miller

Shirley Ann Miller
Shirley A. Miller, 90, a long-time resident of Wingdale, NY, went to heaven to join her husband on Sunday March 25, 2018 at Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel, NY. Born on September 30, 1927 in Canaan, CT, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Henry Hawes, Sr. and Sarah Agnes (Stewart) Hawes who were formerly from Nova Scotia, Canada.
In July 1948, Shirley married the love of her life, Jake Miller, Sr. in Maryland and then renewed their vows at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Dover Plains, NY. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Anyone who knew her, knew she was a very special person. You could always depend on her in good times and bad. She was a full-time mother until she returned work once her children reached high school. She worked as a building supervisor at the Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center in Wingdale, NY for 28 years until her retirement in 1986. Her life was her family and husband. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Wingdale.
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Terri McRoberts, and her husband, Douglas, of Wassaic, NY; Sandi Card of Wingdale, NY, Judi Miller of Philmont, NY and a son, Jake Miller, and his wife, Linda, of Wingdale, NY. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Melissa Pitcher-Kimma, Scott and Jennifer Kelsey, Kristi and Jay Miller, Amanda Wadman, Bryanne Firth, Elisha Card and Caryn Wilde. Shirley is also survived by 15 great grandchildren. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by all her siblings, Terri DeStefano, Eva Dennis, Dolly Anderson, Jennie Kalinec, Kathleen Brighenti, Frannie Wilcutt, Clara Klassaan and Joseph (Harry) Hawes, Jr. Shirley liked this poem that she once read and wanted to be remember by it:

“I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun
Of happy memories, these I leave when life is done.”

It was Shirley’s wishes that there will be no calling hours. Shirley wanted the end of her life as she lived, private. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 62 Mill Street, Dover Plains, NY. Burial will follow at St. Charles Cemetery where Shirley and her loving husband, Jake, will be together forever. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post #1949, P.O. Box 654, Wingdale, NY 12594. To send the family an online condolence, please visit www.hufcutfuneralhome.com.
