Obituary for Lillian May Nickerson

Lillian May Nickerson, a lifelong area resident, died on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Sharon Health Care in Sharon, CT. Mrs. Nickerson worked as a social worker assistant at Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center in Wingdale, NY for 38 years retiring in 1983. She also worked as a waitress at The Pine Restaurant in Wassaic, NY.

Born on March 1, 1928 in Millbrook, NY, she was the daughter of Homer and Elsie (Duncan) Boland. Mrs. Nickerson attended Amenia Schools and evening classes at Dutchess Community College. She married Frank Selfridge in October 1945. From 1946 to 1955, she worked at the former Wassaic State School and then transferred to Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center. On July 29, 1970 in Pawling, NY, she married Kenneth W. Foley who died on June 9, 1994. On June 15, 2002, she married David E. Nickerson who died on September 17, 2006.

Mrs. Nickerson was a former member of the American Legion Post Auxiliary, the Dover-Wingdale Senior Citizens, the Dover Women’s Bowling League and the Civil Services Retirees Association.
An avid reader, she also loved spending time in her garden and enjoyed all the local casinos.

Mrs. Nickerson is survived by three daughters, Judith Butts, and her husband, George of Amenia, NY; Janet Conto, and her husband, John of Dover Plains, NY and Joyce Weegar and her husband, Franklin, of Wassaic, NY; a sister, Jean Bassi of Wingdale, NY and a brother, Harold Duncan of Millbrook, NY. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Leigh Ann Merrill, Michael Butts, Jeffrey Butts, John D. Conto, Jr. Justin Conto, Sarah Simmons, Jodie Robert and Susan Weegar and 13 great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by two brothers, Charles and Percy Duncan and two sisters, Shirley Taylor and Dorothy Selfridge.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff for the wonderful care provided to Mrs. Nickerson while a resident at Sharon Health Care Center.

Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at South Dover Rural Cemetery in Wingdale, NY.
