Obituary for Arthur Jerome Walsh

Arthur J. Walsh, 91, a longtime resident of Amenia, New York, died on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at his home after a battle with cancer.

Mr. Walsh was the owner of A.J. Walsh & Associates, a photo retouching company that was based in New York City. During his career, his clients included CBS Records, NBC, and numerous magazines, publications, and advertising agencies.

Arthur Jerome Walsh was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 25, 1924. He was the son of Arthur and Mary (Shine) Walsh. After graduating from the High School of Music and Art in New York City in 1943, he enlisted with the U.S. Army and served as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division.

His bravery and courageous service during several battles and campaigns in the South Pacific led to several decorations and citations including the American Service Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon, and two Purple Hearts.

It wasn’t until 66 years later at a 2011 Veterans Day ceremony at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library did Arthur finally receive his medals and citations. At the ceremony, he was presented a special proclamation from U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer who recognized his “unwavering dedication and selflessness” to New York, his country, and his fellow veterans.

After the war, Arthur returned to Brooklyn where he worked for The Brooklyn Eagle before opening his own small business. Arthur married Theresa Martha Tumminelli in 1949. They were married 64 years until Theresa died on March 20, 2014.

Arthur is survived by his daughters, Ellen Walsh of Amenia, NY; Janice Shaw and her husband, Edward, of Cortlandt Manor, NY; and Nancy Smith and her husband, John, of Poughkeepsie, NY, and by his sons James Walsh of Amenia, NY; Dennis Walsh of Hyde Park, NY; Robert Walsh and his wife, Cheri, of Brooklyn, NY; and Kenneth Walsh and his wife, Suzanne, of Vassalboro, ME.

Arthur is also survived by nine grandchildren, Timothy and his wife, Michelle, Brianne, Kara, Liam, Sean and Kate Walsh, Julia and Emily Shaw, and Shauna Walczak and her husband, Jonathan and their children, Arthur’s great grandchildren, Grace, Augustine, and Adeline.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the Immaculate Conception Church, Lavelle Rd., Amenia, NY. Burial with military honors will follow at Amenia Island Cemetery.
