Obituary for Deborah A. "Debbie" Downey

Deborah A. "Debbie"  Downey
Deborah “Debbie” A. Downey, 62, of Amenia, NY, died on Monday, June 13, 2016 at Sharon Hospital in Sharon, CT. Born on August 22, 1953 in Sharon, CT she was the daughter of the late Charles and Cynthia (Brendline) Goggins. Debbie was a graduate of Webutuck High School. On March 11, 1972 she married Thomas J. Downey, III who survives at home.

Debbie worked at Taconic DDSO for 38 years retiring in 2013. She was past president of the CSEA local #426 and current secretary of CSEA Retiree’s #909. In 2005, she received the Eileen M. Hickey “Circle of Honor” Award. She was a 27-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #178 in Millerton, NY; serving most recently as Treasurer. She was a charter and life member of VFW Post #5444. She also served as a board member of the Indian Rock Schoolhouse and was an election coordinator of the Democratic Party, as well as Treasurer of the Amenia Monarchs. Debbie was a parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church in Amenia, NY.

Debbie loved to read and garden. She was a great cook, who especially loved to prepare meals and bake for her family. She also took great pleasure in making fabulous birthday cakes for her grandchildren.

In addition to her loving husband, Debbie is survived by her two daughters, Michelle Demczar and her husband, Joe, of Salt Point, NY and Rebecca Duncan and her companion, Steven Haire of Pine Plains, NY; a son, Thomas Downey, IV and his wife, Kim, of Lakeville, CT and five grandchildren, Braeden, Tommy, Reilly, Liam and McKenna. She is also survived by her sister, Charlene Mayville and her husband, Charles; a brother, Lee Garay and his wife, Audrey; her mother-in-law, Mary Ellen Downey and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She will also be remembered by her union brothers and sisters throughout the state. Besides her parents, Debbie was predeceased by her grandson, Dolan Thomas Duncan.

Calling hours will be held on from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 17, 2016 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the Immaculate Conception Church, 4 Lavelle Road, Amenia, NY with Rev. Kent Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Amenia, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Indian Rock Schoolhouse, P.O.
