Obituary for Sophie Orton

Sophie  Orton
Sophie (Adamiec) Orton, age 94, a longtime resident of the Dover Plains, NY, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Sophie was born on July 9, 1920 in Utica, NY, the first daughter of Joseph and Valeria Adamiec. She relocated to Dover Plains, NY, as a teenager to work as an attendant at the Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center, where she met the love of her life, the late Charles G. Orton of Dover Plains. They were married on November 12, 1939. Together, Sophie and Charles raised 10 children and, in between births, Sophie continued working for 14 years before retiring. Sophie was a longtime parishoner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Dover Plains and was also a member of the Dover-Wingdale Senior Citizens Group.

Sophie was a kind, gentle woman whose heart was huge and love vast. Her life was devoted to her husband, her children and grandchildren, and to God. She had a love of gardening and flowers, as well as creating ceramic figurines and painting, and always had a table of food ready for her family and friends. Sophie took pride in bringing people together, and visitors were always welcome in her home.

Mrs. Orton is survived by six sons, Frederick C. Orton and his wife, Carol, of San Diego, CA, Charles Orton and his companion, Susan, of Dover Plains, NY, Theodore Orton and his wife, Rose, of Dover Plains, NY, Richard Orton of Dover Plains, NY, Andrew Orton and his wife, Lisa, of Wingdale, NY and Edward Orton and his wife, Judy of Ames, NY and three daughters, Sandra Fila and her companion, John, of Dover Plains, NY, Valerie Aparo and her husband, Craig, of North Adams, MA and Eleanor Conklin and her husband, Jesse of Ashley Falls, MA. She is also survived by two sisters, Josephine Starr of Sarasota, FL and Melanie Gorman of Long Island, NY and fifteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Orton was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Dwy and a brother, Theodore Adamiec.

Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 62 Mill St., Dover Plains, NY. Burial will follow at South Dover Rural Cemetery in Wingdale, NY.
